Carlsbad is a picturesque coastal resort city in San Diego's North County. It has one of the highest standards of living in the United States and is well-known for tourism, shopping and resort living. Its pristine beaches stretch for more than seven miles and draw thousands of visitors, as do its excellent golf courses such as The Crossings. From March to May the famous Flower Fields are in full bloom and worth a visit. For residents in the hotels Carlsbad has much to offer, such as Legoland California, which includes three roller coasters. The Sea Life Aquarium next to Legoland features interactive learning opportunities for children of all ages. There are four major airports within 50 miles, of which McClellan-Palomar is the closest.
The Carlsbad Village in the north of the city affords delightful shopping opportunities. The Art and Antique Mall abounds with unique finds and the Farmer's Market takes you back to country living with fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers. The Village Faire Shopping Center presents more opportunities for general shopping, as do Macy's Department Store and Las Americanas Premium Outlets. Fashion Valley and Blue Apparel LLC have clothing for the fashion conscious.
For visitors staying in the hotels Carlsbad has many amenities. The air-conditioned rooms are spacious and well-appointed, with marble en suite bathrooms, a choice of bedding and many luxurious extras, such as designer toiletries, bathrobes and large-screen television sets with DVD and CD players. Swimming pools, saunas, a gym and children's playground are all on site, as are car rental desks, ATM machines and gift shops. Most hotels are close to excellent restaurants such as Bistro West and the Bellefleur. For Middle Eastern food, visit the Armenian Café and enjoy the local Californian Pizza at Al's New York Pizza. For Sunday Champagne Brunch head to The Ocean House Restaurant.
If you are a business person in these hotels Carlsbad can offer you a very pleasant stay. Rooms contain work centers with personal computers, telephone answering services and wake up calls. A business center will take care of all photocopying and fax needs and conferencing venues in the building can usually accommodate any number of delegates with ease. Lodgings are often close to public transport or offer a shuttle service; business parks or office blocks are within easy reach as hotels are mostly situated near the city center. Informal business discussions can be concluded on the golf courses of the Rancho Carlsbad Country Club or the La Costa Resort and Spa. The Gentleman's Tux Club will supply clothing for evening functions, such as at the Witch Creek Winery tasting room.
For a thriving night life, head to the Pacific Beach or Gaslamp districts. The Pacific Beach Bar and Grill includes a dance club. Typhoon Saloon features live bands and the recently remodeled Moondoggies is a very popular spot at night. For something a bit classier, visit Johnny V or The Silver Fox for a slightly older crowd.
The area supports many very interesting annual events. The New Year's Day Race Regatta includes all sizes of boats and yachts; the popular Oceanside Marathon and Half Marathon are also held in January. February sees the Brazil Carnival with parades and a Samba competition. St Patrick's Day is celebrated in March with a parade and Family Festival of fun and food. In April the Escondido Renaissance Faire will transport you to the time of Shakespeare. The Ramona Rodeo in May will entertain you for three days with all things on horseback. In June the La Jolla Festival of the Arts features art, music and lots of other fun. The 4th of July celebrations include fireworks and parades. The Bluegrass Festival in August is very much a family affair; not so the adult-aimed September Festival of Beer which celebrates locally-brewed ale. La Mesa's Oktoberfest is traditionally German, with Bavarian bands and Bratwurst. Christmas on the Farm at Bates Nut Farm features handmade gifts and fine arts. The Pacific Beach Christmas Parade has marching bands, floats and many more events. California Gray Whale watching in December is not to be missed; another exciting event in the same month is the Big Bay Balloon Parade, featuring a large number of massive inflatables, floats and marching bands.
